Entrants must be located in the Brisbane local government area to be eligible to enter the WasteSMART Brisbane Awards.

For an individual or group to be eligible for the 2024 awards, the activity needed to have been carried out in Brisbane between 1 July 2023 and 30 June 2024 and must demonstrate that their nomination is for a new initiative or new addition to an existing initiative that has produced new outcomes during the eligibility period.

The judges sometimes move a nominee to a different category if they feel it would be a better fit. You can enter multiple categories, but a project can only be a finalist in one category.

Individuals

Individuals in the Brisbane community young or old (must be over the age of 6) are eligible for the Local Legends Award and the Circular Threads Award.

Community Groups

Community groups and associations (incorporated or non-incorporated), not-for-profit organisations, and charities based in Brisbane are eligible to nominate for the Community Award and the Circular Threads Award.

Businesses

Brisbane businesses are eligible to nominate in the Business, Circular Threads, and Hospitality & Tourism categories. The Business category which contains two awards, one which recognises organisations who have incorporated ‘waste smart’ strategies into their day-to-day operations and another which recognises organisations with waste reduction as their core business function.

Schools

Primary schools and high schools within the Brisbane City Council area are eligible to enter for the Schools Award.

This is also open to outside school hours care and Parent & Citizen (P&C) groups.

Kindergartens & Early Learning Centres

Kindergartens and early learning centres within the Brisbane City Council area are eligible to enter in the Early Learning Award.
