Brisbane’s WasteSMART Champions Award (contains 2 awards)

This category has two awards - one for a 6-17 year old, and one for an individual over 18 years. The award is open to individuals. It recognises efforts related to waste reduction and education (such as reducing food waste, improving recycling and composting). This can include participating in established programs (e.g. 104 or More, Community Composting Hubs, Clean Up Australia Day) which contribute to a clean and green Brisbane.

WasteSMART Community Award (contains 2 Awards)

This award is open to community groups and contains 2 awards. It recognises efforts related to waste management, reduction and education initiatives e.g. community engagement, awareness and education programs. This can include community collaboration in litter picking, landfill avoidance and reuse initiatives.

2 prizes to the value of $350 each

WasteSMART Business Award (Contains 2 Awards)

This award is open to businesses and contains 2 categories - one for businesses with under 50 employees, and one for businesses with 50 employees or more. It recognises Brisbane businesses whose staff understand waste and actively look for options to reduce waste to landfill, increase recycling, and avoid the landfill levy. This can include improved stock management to reduce waste, implementing recycling options and reducing waste management costs.

WasteSMART Kindy Award

This award is to encourage and recognise implemented environmental initiatives in a kindy that have a focus on litter reduction, waste management and education. This can include improving recycling systems, litter clubs, and composting food waste.

WasteSMART Schools Award (contains 2 awards)

This category has two awards - one for a Primary School and one for a Secondary School. This award is to encourage and recognise implemented environmental initiatives in a school that has a focus on litter reduction, waste management and education. This can include improving recycling systems, litter clubs, and composting food waste.

People’s Choice WasteSMART Award

The public is invited to vote for the one winner in this category. This category comprises all the Finalists shortlisted by the judges across all categories.

Councillors’ WasteSMART Choice Award (only Councillors can nominate)

Each Brisbane City Councillor has the opportunity to nominate one local idea or activity that has made a real difference in their local community to waste management, education or litter prevention.

Judging

A panel of Waste Smart assessors evaluates all entries. The assessors will then refer the finalists to the Waste Smart Brisbane Awards judges who are responsible for selecting the winners. All finalists are also be eligible for the People's Choice Waste Smart Award which is voted on by the public.
